When your smile is less than perfect, you have a few different treatment options. You can improve the appearance of your teeth with a smile makeover, which is a combination of cosmetic procedures such as bonding or the placement of porcelain veneers; or you can reconstruct or replace teeth with a full mouth reconstruction, which is a combination of reconstructive procedures such as the placement of dental implants or dental crowns. It is not always easy to identify the better solution, but it becomes clearer as you understand the characteristics that necessitate a full mouth reconstruction. Drs. Jayne and Kois believe a smile goes a long way. Your smile reveals a lot about you, and a growing amount of research says smiling itself has many benefits. Here, we take a look at some benefits, including some that may surprise you.
Boosts Your Mood
Several studies have found that wearing a big smile produces a change in brain activity that elevates mood. This means that smiling, even when you are not feeling happy, may actually make you happier.
A study published in Psychological Science found smiling can reduce stress. Researchers had individuals complete two different stressful tasks while holding chopsticks in their mouths in certain arrangements (some had neutral expressions and others had different degrees of smiling). The students with the biggest smiles showed a reduction in heart rate and a quicker stress recovery than those with neutral expressions.
Improves Your Heart Health
Because smiling reduces stress and boosts mood, it may also lead to a healthier heart. Stress is a well-known risk factor for certain heart conditions, and several studies have found that happy people are less likely to develop heart disease than those who are less happy.
Makes You More Attractive
A study by Orbit Complete found that smiling is more attractive than wearing makeup. The study found that 70 percent of people surveyed rated women who smiled and wore no makeup as more attractive than women who did not smile but did wear makeup. Additionally, eight out of 10 respondents ranked smiling women as approachable.
